June 8th, 2010

If you’ve been in the decorating mode and shopped around, if you’re remodeling, or have purchased a new home, you have discovered shopping for designs and styles is an exciting adventure with the choices available. With such a wide variety and unique styles of furniture being offered on the market it is hard to arrive at the perfect decision to meet your expectations. When you get into the dining areas of your home, here are a few things you should know about dining tables that may help narrow your choices for the best decision.

When it comes to buying a dining table you have several options. This adds to a decorator’s excitement. The type of table you choose of course would depend on the room and your individual taste. There are also other factors to consider when purchasing the furniture that will dictate what your choices should be. Determining the size you need and how the table will be used is beneficial.

To help you narrow your choices, take a look at the room you are furnishing. If you are looking for a formal dining table versus an informal one, making that mental note will definitely send you in the right direction and these types of tables will differ in design, durability, and functionality. In most cases they will also vary significantly in size. There are also kitchen tables and tall tables and chairs that are bar level. There a variety of shapes and sizes to fit most any preference.

Now that you have the room, the next step is the style. A traditional formal dining room table comes in a rectangle shape that can be short or long. The choice would depend on the size of your room and how much table it can fit within and the number of guests you will seat.

Over the last few years a formal round dining table has become very popular. They are eye catching and easy to decorate. They are accommodating with the ability to seat up to six people and by being round does not take up as much space and they are easy to navigate around.

Besides these 2 styles there are other choices to add a glow. They are both easy to design to create the eye-catching look adding that special appeal to your room. They will also have a variety of matching chair and accessory options.

Another option you have with a dining table is a variety of glass tables. These also come in round or square and can be used in formal or informal rooms. There are so many wood choices to choose from whether it be light, dark, or painted, it can be found and by picking the right one can deliver that special look.

The informal dining table is less expensive than that of the formal and come in durable wood like finishes like laminate and veneer. If you are shopping for an informal look perhaps for a kitchen or nook by the bay window you can find several styles to fit in most budgets.

Different Types of Dining Tables

Considering kinds of dining tables is the first step to furnishing your dining room. One could consider getting a dining set; the sort that has a matched set of table, chairs, sideboard or hutch or server etc., or you can mix and match, choosing from a wide array of dining tables that are available to suit any requirement. You could choose a truly exclusive and unusual dining table or you could get a not very extraordinary one and then use touches like custom table cloths, high quality linen or fine china and exquisite cutlery to set it off. There is a lot to choose from:

The Shape: The shape of dining tables has evolved a lot since the time when it was a boring rectangle; take it or leave it. Now one can choose from among round, oval, square, you name it! The rule of thumb with the shape of dining tables is, go for round when there is less space. Also the big rectangle table can appear quite formal so if it is a cozy or intimate setting that one is aiming for, round may be the way to go.

Size: Here again the choices are vast. For a really large and formal dining space, one could choose a long dining table that can seat 8, 10 or more people. But few of us may have such a requirement or indeed the kind of dining area that would be required to accommodate that. It is important to remember that many of us don’t even need the traditional 6 seater dining table on a daily basis. Consider an interestingly different square four seater. This may well be enough for the daily requirements of many of us. If one does need six chairs but has space constrains then round is the way to go. With round tables, more chairs can be fit around a table while taking up less space. Sometimes dining sets make a lot of sense for they could well be the space savers that one is looking for.

Materials used to make the table: It makes a lot of practical sense to go in for a veneer table which looks like wood but is sturdier and more hardy, being resistant to warping, spills etc. many of us may not like the look of veneer, in which case one can always invest in a custom tablecloth to impart the exclusivity and touch of class. Wood is not the only material available for dining tables; far from it. Wrought iron, glass and even plastic are some of the other options that one may do well to consider. Glass is classy; plus transparent and therefore creates the illusion of more space. It is easy to clean but can be prone to gather dust and scratches. As for plastic, they don’t have to look ‘cheap’ as may be a popular perception. Now even these can be got in great designs and finishes that are almost indistinguishable from wood! And they aren’t just for the garden or yard either. With some imagination they could be made to fit anywhere!

So lots to choose from there, in terms of the kinds of dining tables that you could buy!
